Thai Black Pepper Use in Knee Osteoarthritis

A study from Thailand found that Thai black pepper may be better than using prescription pain medication for knee osteoarthritis.

A Thailand study compared a 50 year old remedy called Sahastara (which contains Thai black pepper as the main ingredient) against a common pain medicine called Diclofenac (Voltaren). Diclofenac is a widely prescribed non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to treat pain associated with osteoarthritis. The Sahastara remedy has been used for the past 50 years in Thailand to also treat pain from osteoarthritis.

The study gathered data from 66 patients split into two groups with one group taking the Thai black pepper remedy and the other group taking the prescription NSAID. The results showed the Thai black pepper Sahastara remedy was similar and just as effective as the NSAID in handling the symptoms of knee pain, but did not have any toxicity levels in renal and kidney function as was seen in the group taking the NSAID Dicofenac.

Studies like this are needed to investigate alternatives to prescription pain medicines which can have toxic effects to the body, especially with the elderly.

Does your child or family member have flat feet or fallen arches?

Approximately 42% of people have flat feet or “fallen arches” which really is a result of misaligned feet. It’s an internal defect in the foot that they were born with and only gets worse with age.

Signs and complaints from someone with flat feet, or collapsed arches are:

  • Aching feet while/after walking or running
  • Your child wants you to carry them more often because their feet hurt
  • You can see their feet roll inward when they walk, and their arch flattens out when they are standing up right
  • They avoid exercise

Left untreated, misaligned feet can cause joint pain in the knee, hip and lower back as these joints are over-compensating for the misaligned foot. Your child may be seeing the doctor for knee pain complaints where the underlying problem may be a misaligned foot. It can easily go undiagnosed if the doctor does not look at the biomechanics of the patient’s gait (looks at their walk pattern).

Many times arch support inserts are given to the patient. If arch supports are not working and foot pain persists, then it’s very likely the problem is an internal defect known as talar tarsal dislocation, which is when the anklebone is sliding abnormally off the heel bone. The question to ask is: Is my child’s flat feet from a talar tarsal dislocation? If so, there are a few options to discuss with the physician to fix it.

One of these options is a minimally invasive procedure using a tiny FDA cleared device called “HyProCure” to keep the anklebone from sliding off the heel bone. This is a fantastic internal fix and its success is supported by clinical data and used by many of the best foot surgeons in the World with over 40,000 procedures already. Patients who have had their flat feet fixed with HyProCure are amazed at how it has restored their quality of life.

Be Your Own Health Advocate

Why are you not getting better?

If you continue to suffer from foot and or joint pain, a soft tissue injury or a wound that is not healing, you need to stop and ask why am I not getting better? Is it my diet? Not enough exercise? Do I need to see a different doctor and get a second opinion?

The bottom line these days is patients and their families need to take a serious interest in their injury or illness and do some homework educating themselves. Patients need to be their own advocate because the fact is, there isn’t anyone more incentivized to get you better than yourself. First, educate your self on what exactly you have been diagnosed with that is causing your pain or reduced life style. Is it Plantar Fasciitis or Achilles tendonitis? Is it Osteoarthritis in the knee, ankle, elbow or shoulder? Do you have an ulcer or wound that is not healing? Are you gaining weight because you don’t exercise due to pain? Once you understand your injury, its time to explore the options, therapies and technologies that are available.

It’s very possible that your physician or hospital is not up to date on the newest technology or therapies. Search the Internet regarding your diagnosis and see what alternatives are being used compared to the therapy you are using. Sommita Medical represents specialty technology products including amniotic MSC stem cell products have demonstrated remarkable results in wound healing and joint pain relief. Amniotic MSC stem cell injection therapy has had remarkable study outcomes in patients with: plantar fasciitis, Osteoarthritis, turf toe and soft tissue injury. Amniotic and stem cell therapies have been used by professional athletes, Olympic athletes, and everyday tennis, golf, and skiers to repair their bodies so they can return to play.

If getting better is a priority, then you owe it to yourself to read about your options and do something about it and fix your pain yourself. No one else is more motivated to do it, especially your insurance company.
